review 1: At school, 16 year-old Alex is too paralyzed with fear in driver's ed and is dealing with her first boyfriend, Jim. At home, Alex is dealing with a younger brother and sister, plus her dad's attempt to manage her mom's mental health care. Alex's mom is delusional thinking she's Amelia Earhart and is getting ready for her final flight. How Alex handles, or mishandles, her circumstances is the basis of this book. This is an emotional, coming-of-age story about how mental illness affects the entire family. There are some language issues for school libraries, however the issues are dealt with realistically and without a tidy ending.
review 2: I had felt going into this book that there was a high possibility of me enjoying it; unfortunately that never happened. I wa... mores engaged with it, I enjoyed the majority of the character development, but my biggest issue was the "love story". That I didn't engage with. There wasn't anything particularly wrong with it, I personally just didn't feel Alex and Jim together, it felt bland and kind of 'meh' so to speak. I would have much preferred to see Alex's relationships with her family - one of the key things I enjoyed - or with the friends who apparently became rather irrelevant within the story, than her romantic life. Ultimately this book had a lot of potential, and a premise that otherwise would have drawn me completely in, this was just hard to do when I had little emotional connection to such large aspects of the text. less
