review 1: I expected this book to be mostly a gritty drama about a mother & daughter living in poverty on the margins of society. While the book was somewhat in that vein, the backdrop of much of it was a group of quirky (kind of stereotypical quirky) small town diner characters and neighbors who mostly provide comic relief and/or opportunities for some sentimental moments. Parts of the book would probably be a good basis for a movie or TV series except that "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" & "Mel's Diner" have already been done.
review 2: Grudgingly giving this three stars because I did actually read it through to the end (skimming the last few sections). But there was nothing in this book that was not predictable. Every plot element was easily foreseeable, and the
... morebehavior of the characters strained credibility. Why was everyone so impressed with Ruthie? Are we supposed to believe any people would actually act this ludicrous and self destructive? Could somebody please tell Annie Weatherwax that nobody laughs about anything "for hours," and certainly not "for hours" this often. And Ruthie's hero worship of her mother needed to be tempered with a more clear-eyed understanding of the way her mother fails her even while loving her. But I like Weatherwax's writing style very much and hope she will apply herself to her next story with more imagination and originality. There was something about this one that felt like a script for a mediocre movie. less
