review 1: I was disappointed with the direction this book went in the end. The insights of the first half of the book into the subtlety and pervasiveness of pride and the desire to "leave one's mark on the world" is jaw-dropping in its honest, raw, assessment. Unfortunately, the book resolved the problem with a form of the "poverty gospel", i.g. asceticism, which is really just a different form of the "prosperity gospel" i.g. "live like no one else so later you can live like no one else." Both teach a do-this and God will bless you later for it. The only difference is that the Prosperity "gospel" teaches rewards reaped on earth while the Poverity "gospel" teaches rewards reaped in heaven. Both are inherently hedonistic and fail to recognize Christ as the only reward worth ha... moreving.
review 2: This book should permanently sit on everyone's bedside table. Christian or not. Humbles us to admit to the games we so often play with ourselves as we crave affirmation from the masses through social media, or even by constantly working on the title and subtitle of our self-proclaimed identities. In a time where I'm concerned by our future kids' perception of themselves according to likes, comments, and shares- modeled by their parent's generation- this book comes at just the right time. I'm so glad this anonymous author didn't ignore the grasping conviction to write this book, even though (s)he tried to let the planted idea go. The author needed this book. I needed this book, and you needed this book. less
