review 1: When I started this book, I had high expectations for it. It took forever for me to get it from the library, and it was one of those books that I heard would be read in one sitting. Needless to say, I finished it in one day. I couldn’t put it down. Every time I took a break, I felt like I had paused a really good movie that I had to get back to. I enjoy watching crime shows, but those are all told from the officials’ perspectives. This book was told from multiple views, Gabbie, Drew, Kayla, and John Robertson. Gabbie, Drew, and Kayla work together at a pizza place, until one night Kayla is kidnapped when delivering pizzas. John Robertson is the man who called in for the delivery, and he kidnapped Kayla. But, when he called for pizza, he had originally asked for Gabbie ... moreto deliver it, but she was off that night. After Kayla’s kidnapping, Gabbie and Drew are filled with guilt. Gabbie because she feels like he wanted her, not Kayla, and Drew because he let Kayla go out and deliver that night. Gabbie knows that Kayla is alive. She can’t explain it, but she feels that she is still here. I liked that this book was told from multiple views, even the kidnapper’s view, so that you could see each person’s role in a crime investigation. In the end, it was not the police that found Kayla, but Gabbie and Drew. They were both admirable and brave characters that I was able to really connect with. When I finished the last page, I felt sad. It was a good ending, it didn’t leave me hanging with suspense, but I just didn’t want the story to end. I know they say, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” but this book you could. It looks like a thriller that will have you looking over your shoulder as you read, and it surpassed these expectations.
review 2: April Henry is like a modern day Christopher Pike or R.L. Stine. Her books are an easy sell for middle school kids, and though they deal with frightening topics, most of the violence is off page. This book is suspenseful like her others, and also uses various formats (i.e. transcripts, multiple narrators, notes, FAQs, police reports) to tell the story of a kidnapped pizza delivery girl. Not a literary masterpiece, but a solid addition to YA crime fiction for reluctant readers. less
