review 1: I really enjoyed this book. It was my first Archer Mayor mystery and I want to read more. Joe Gunther is a smart, compassionate and thoughtful narrator. The book includes sympathetic and nuanced portrayals of sexual assault as well as a decidedly progressive/feminist response to rape. I was particularly touched by the focus on how a man deals with his partner's sexual assault while also attempting to solve the crime. I had a harder time at first following the personalities and the complicated local politics in Vermont involving officials, media and police, as well as a suspenseful well paced mystery overall. It reminded me of a writer in my writing workshop Marla's work which won't mean anything to anyone who doesn't know her but is a high compliment. There is a crispness ... moreand a economy to Mayor's language. Good pacing, interesting twists and turns and of course the New England vibe helped its accessibility.
review 2: Another Archer Mayor Joe Gunther winner. I liked this one very much. Rape is every woman's nightmare and Mayor treated it with realism and the deserved respect for the character. His books tend to be unemotional, so the fact that he decided to cover this subject is a little surprising. But they always include plot twists and turns that are sometimes predictable, but sometimes a complete surprise. less

Another great story, Mayor makes Vermont seem like a very unsafe place to live.
