review 1: I like this series mostly because it's set in Vermont. Archer Mayor's books are well-researched, well-plotted, and written in clear prose. Gunther is a good cop, with no bad habits, who keeps his disappointments mostly to himself. Though I can enjoy reading about the brooding, self-destructive detectives more in vogue, I find Gunther a refreshing antidote. If he is sometimes a bit flat, his frequent partner Willie Kunkel is everything he's not: sarcastic, crude, pessimistic, and sometimes funny. This time, however, though Kunkel gets plenty of pages in this novel, he doesn't have much effect on the plot. The other characters are serviceable but not memorable, as you might expect in a 15th novel (16th if you count one in which Willy Kunkel starred). I recommend this series ... moreif you want to spend some time in Northern New England and desire something a little heavier than say, M.C. Beaton, but I'd start with an earlier book, such as "Open Season" or "Borderlines."
review 2: #16 in the Joe Gunther series. Great story and agent Willie Kunkle shines in a featured role. The competence of Gunther and Kunkle investigating the underworld outside their native state may be a bit of a stretch.Joe Gunther series - Deaths and barn burnings north of Burlington, Vt., that result in farm sales to two local real estate agents lead Joe Gunther into a convoluted case. Are the crimes personal or financial, coincidental or planned? Gunther and his obstreperous sidekick, Willy Kunkle, travel to Newark, N.J., in search of answers and an arsonist. When the Jersey police are first helpful then dismissive, the pair decide to investigate on their own, turning up some surprising evidence in Newark's underworld. less

Absorbing, quite dark. I like Joe Gunther, and enjoy the descriptions of Vermont life.

Even though this book is part of a series, it stood very well on its own.
