review 1: Chiro, the little bat in Nightsong is so adorably cute one might think an animator created him for a movie. Loren Long's illustrations are exceptional. His night scenes have texture, depth and visibility. The visibility echolocation creates for Chiro is very clear. Ari Berk did a wonderful job of explaining echolocation on a child's level through his narrative (though the term is never used). The little bat gains confidence and returns home to his mother safely. This story is a bit shorter than Stellaluna.
review 2: This charmer explains echolocation without ever using that word. Baby bat is afraid to go out at night by himself- he can't see well and isn't sure how he won't get lost or crash into things. How is he ever going to find dinner? His mom tells h... moreim to just sing his special song (the clicking noise we know bats to make) to figure out the distances between him and his surroundings, and he has a great time eating dinner and swimming out to the sea. Great book to connect to the PebbleGo Animals database, Austin's unofficial animal, the five senses, animal adaptations, and other Science topics. less
