Mick Oberon
review 1: Mick Oberon, detective in 1930s Chicago. Not only did it capture a feel of a detective noir novel -- heavy slang, damsels in distress, uneasy alliances, and inevitable betrayals -- the author managed to keep the urban fantasy in check. This isn't a world where every other character is a vampire or fairy lord -- this is a world where they live in the shadows, surrounded by humanity; or they live in the fairy world, mirroring human life in a pale mockery. The story is compelling and fast-paced, the backstory seems rich with potential, and the fight scenes actually felt like experienced fight scenes. (No, these weren't overpowered, high level magical duels -- they were fights that would fit in a Spillane novel, but with magic as a tactic to go with braw... moreling.
review 2: Chicago during prohibition. The most iconic setting for an old school gangster novella and a story about a rock hard gumshoe who uses sarcasm and wisecracks to deal with the world. Mick Oberon doesn't disappoint. He's hard on the outside, soft on the inside but you know better to spread that around, see? A P.I. dancing on the line between old school gangsters, the police and his own problems, walking the streets carrying his trusty... magic wand? Oh yes. There is magic, there are Sidhe and brownies, witches and warlocks. And yet... The world feels real. The supernatural elements just add an interesting layer. One that is connected to everything but is in no way more or less real. There's just the right amount of grit, just the right amount of despair and just the right amount of hope. Mick Oberon gets involved in a case that seems straightforward. Solving a kidnapping is as simple as finding the kid that was napped and the napper that kidnapped the kid, right? Right. In a way, it is. But there are a few things that complicate matters and soon Mick has to do things he doesn't really want to do, soon he has to get involved with a past he swore he left behind. And there is a twist. There's always a twist isn't there? Imagine if Raymond Chandler and Jim Butcher spent a night drinking together and then started collaborating on a story.I finished the book on friday the 13th. I find that oddly fitting. Can't wait for the next book. less

I like the era for this urban fantasy, but it didn't hold my interest.
