review 1: I've always had a soft spot for rugged men and the lives they lead. As a city boy the image of the cowboy, or in this case the life in the Australian Outback have always appealed to me and this story certainly fits the bill. Caine has risked everything familiar to him as he flees a dead end job in Philadelphia to take over his Great Uncle's sheep station in Australia. Caine is a real 'Blow-in' who knows virtually nothing beyond what he has read in books about sheep and sheep farming. He knows he will need to rely heavily on station foreman, Macklin, to get him through. What he doesn't know is how strongly he will be attracted to Macklin and that there would be any possibility that that attraction could be returned.Through a number of trials and a belief that he can b... moree as good a man as his uncle had been Caine learns the business by doing and in the process gains the admiration, and affection of not only Macklin but the rest of the jackaroos on the station. A really great read.
review 2: I hate it when that happens. Two very different MCs + the Outback + ranch life (Australian cowboys, people!) = HOTNESS, right? You’d think, but this was a total FAIL, and I struggled to give it even 2 stars. The writing was choppy, elementary, and formulaic. Some things were described in excruciating detail (what supplies Caine buys at the store, sheep breeding, etc.), but the actual relationship between Caine and Macklin was totally undeveloped and utterly unbelievable. There was no chemistry, no stealing glances. At 40 percent in, Macklin kisses Caine. This comes randomly out of the blue. We get only Caine’s POV, so Macklin’s character feels wooden. We have no idea what he’s thinking. He’s in the closet; he doesn’t want to bottom. That’s about it. And Caine talks like a school marm. He’s so fucking polite all the time, I wanted to throttle him. He’s supposed to be 32, but he acts 20. Relationships are supposed to happen somewhat organically. This one was like a badly arranged marriage. There is no spark, followed by hot sex, followed by conflict and resolution. No, instead we have Caine trying to talk Macklin into having a relationship (perhaps cause he’s the only other gay man in a 100-mile radius?) – even before they have sex! Gawd, who does that? There’s also a convoluted “mystery” about sabotage on the ranch that was too neatly wrapped up at the end. The epilogue was unnecessary and offered nothing. Total letdown. less
