review 1: In Reparations in Blood, the author is finally able to cull through the extraneous crap that plagued the earlier books in this series, and focus on the key characters. There is no doubt that the key characters in this series of novels are Alain (a wizard) and Orlando (a vampire). In the background of a magical war, we learn of the love affair between these two characters. For one thousand pages over the course of four novels, the author develops this relationship -- the entire focus of the relationship for the first 996 pages of the novels is a two year period of time the culminates in the climactic ending of the wizard war. That would have been a great place to end the story -- the reader would be left to wonder about the future life of the main characters and wanti... moreng to know more about them, even though their written stories are concluded. But NOOOOO, this author has to bang any independent thought out of our heads and write a four page epilogue -- a total cop out of an ending. Here's the epilogue -- fast forward 94 years, and the lovers are dead. It was an horrendous way to end a story that this Author had apparently nurtured for years and years and leaves this reader more annoyed than anything. My earlier reviews of this author's work have raised to be a questions concerning her ability to write M/M romance -- questioning whether she understands the inner emotional workings of the commitment between two men. This novel does not particularly change my thoughts concerning the author's failings, however, she has been able to eliminate many of the criticisms that plagued her earlier novels. On the goodreads scale, this book scores 2.5 stars for me.
review 2: What can I say?I loved the first 3 books in this series. Well written, fabulous and complex story, characters with depth that continue to grow from book to book. This one is the best of the bunch. While the focus of the book is still on Alain and Orlando - the author fleshes out several of the other duos. As in real life, the good guys aren't all good, and the bad guys aren't always all bad. She handles the sexual interactions between M/M, F/F, and M/F very well. Most of the partners are M/M, but it is refreshing when she gives us a glimpse of the other couples as well. The writing is elegant, but not stuffy or stilted. Since each pairing includes a wizard and a vampire, there is plenty of biting going on. The war between the dark wizards and the Alliance is coming to an end - one way or another. I won't spoil anything here. The ending - WOW! That is actually what I said when I finished this book. Very well done. less
