review 1: Roy is brilliant and thought provoking.Great creative prose and unadulterated feeling shines through. Those who don't grok her style will be left wondering a little.This, I feel, is not a book that focuses on dry discourse of facts and detached reporting. She pours her heart, soul and mixes it with humour dark enough to form a black hole that conveys the despair of the downtrodden.There is abundant literature to support her stance, and a lot of the references she makes must satisfy those who complain about this book not providing them "inline."

Eye opening. The width of fascism in India was well beyond my understanding. I hardly ever mind moralism, but if there is anything I lack in this splendid collection, it's a more poetic language. less
