review 1: I think I said in a review of another book that you should never mix first and third person narrative, but there are of course always exception to the rules. In this book every chapter starts with a journal note from Colin (and sometimes they show up in other parts of the text), written in first person, but the book is told in a more omnipresent third person narrative. It worked great. This book was good! I liked the characters, liked getting to know Colin, and I liked the mystery, finding out how a gun ended up in a high school caféteria. Maybe the ending shouldn't have been hinting that much at a sequel, but other than that a great, quick read.
review 2: I loved The Curious Incident of the Dog In The Night Time, and that book and Colin Fischer have characters
... more with conditions on the ASD spectrum. However, in comparison to each other, I found Colin Fischer a bit of a let down. The book is about Colin, a freshman at West Valley High School who avoids being touched, needed flash cards to understand facial expressions and always carries around a notebook, the same one since kindergarten. A gun is fired one day in the school cafeteria, and Colin is one of the only people who isn't scared, but curious. He finds out his lifelong bully, Wayne Connelly, who on the first day dunked his head in the toilet, is innocent, although is presumed guilty. And despite all of the stuff Wayne's done to him, Colin's determined to prove him innocent, to the shock of everyone around him.Don't get me wrong, although I wasn't exactly the person who's going to rave about this book, there were upsides. The storyline is original, save for the fact Mark Haddon also shares an ASD boy who tries to solve something, and the characters were unique. The use of the Notebook featured prominently and to good effect. It's a weird mix of fiction and non fiction, although the weird mix is something I enjoyed. The characters were also a great portrayal of high school students and especially the freshman struggles. However the storyline was not as well sustained as it could have been and I'm left to wonder about the actual appearances of the characters (it's alright knowing that some of them are bulky, but not so much I don't know the first thing about their face). However, the book is summed up for me as being interesting. Not the best of novels I've read, but it was quite fun to read. less
