review 1: 4.5 stars, I really liked this book a lot. Almost anyone reading this book whoever had their heart broken can relate to Henrietta the heroine. After a broken betrothal, Henrietta is a paid companion to a cranky old woman, but she at least has some sort of independence. One stormy night, her employer's great-nephew washes ashore after a shipwreck. It seems that great-nephew, Alexander, is her former betrothed. He left her eight years earlier to repair his family's assets by sailing to India and promised to marry her as soon as he made a fortune and returned. Unfortunately for them both, fate has other plans in store for Alexander, he marries another woman while in India.Henrietta wants nothing more than to run far away and never see Alexander again. Worse, a few days... more after he arrives his two daughters arrive, but their mother died in India. Henrietta can't decide if she wants to hear Alexander's explanation or not, Alexander gives her only half-truths about the situation saying his honor forbids him to tell her the whole truth. There is some intrigue in the story about a box that Alexander brought back with him from India. I really felt for Henrietta in this story, she never really got over her broken heart, and when Alexander decides that they should go ahead and get married eight years later, you can imagine how upset she was.Great story watching these two work through the issues of their past. The author really draws her readers in and makes you not want to stop reading until you hear Alexander's full story. The love scenes took time in coming, which was appropriate for the story because of all the back history of these two characters, but they were very nice.I am thinking the author is going to write about Alexander's two best friends, we met one in the story, but not the other one yet. I can't wait to read more from this author.I received this complimentary copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
review 2: I thought this was an exciting historical. With the drama and lost love, mystery, passion, it's a flammable story. I love lost love stories. This tale weaves together two characters that had been in love. They were torn apart years before, but can they reconnect? Oh, the will they won't they will keep you turning the pages in this book! The only reason it isn't a 5 star for me is that in some parts it dragged a little. But in all, with a meddlesome relative and all the intrigue, it's a great read! less
