review 1: Umm... this was very, very weird. This first book was very much an introductory book trying to introduce the reader to this weird world where Death Meisters try to kill as many souls as they can with their Death weapons. These Death weapons have the magical ability to transform into people (?) and then eat the souls that they have killed. The ultimate goal is to become a Death weapon so powerful that the Shinigami himself will use them, in order to do that the death weapon and their meister must kill and consume 99 human souls and one witches soul. We are introduced to three teams of characters, Maka and Soul Eater, Black Star and Tsubaki (or something like that), and Death the Kid with his two sister weapons. This manga is kind of a mix between teen and adult. The charact... moreers feel very much like teens, but then some kind of adult images are added to the mix. I'm still not sure what to think of the overall story, so I'll probably read more of it because my library does have a bunch of the volumes. I don't think this will be my favorite manga series ever, but it is a way to pass the time.
review 2: Hoo boy, I'm not so sure about this series. Some of the designs are nice, and the basic idea is appealingly strange (kids go to a school where they partner up with magical weapons that can transform into human form, and they have to collect souls and try to become the official weapon of Shinigami-Sama, who is basically the Grim Reaper), but it seems really slight, little more than a basis for characters shouting and attacking each other, then bonding and forming friendships and loyalties, with regular fan service. Yeah, yeah, welcome to manga, right? And maybe I haven't been reading enough manga lately, because said fan service is really weirding me out, with the over-endowed female characters regularly appearing completely naked, but still attempting to remain within the bounds of good taste by virtue of having invisible nipples and genital details. Making them into Barbie dolls might skirt censors, but it's especially weird when ladies are inconsistent about when they get mad at being peeped on, and they're fine with squishing their boobs against the boys' faces and whatnot. It's all just generally kind of creepy, and I don't know what it has to do with hunting souls. I guess I'm getting too old for this shit. less
