review 1: A book specifically written for lovers of the written word. Beautifully illustrated, enchanting and of course in perfect Niffenegger style, awfully depressing. Despite other readers disappointment, I truly enjoyed this beautiful work of art. Audrey certainly writes for herself and no one else and I highly respect that. This story could have gone down many paths but it stayed true to the unexpected and the not so picture perfect ending. That's why I love Audrey.
review 2: It would be hard to overstate how much I do not recommend this book. It includes perhaps the most gratuitous suicide I've ever encountered in literature. The author writes in the afterword that she used to die frequently in her dreams "often from causes that should have been insufficient for de
... moreath." Why not stick with one of those fantastical deaths to take a character to the other side? Lexi's sudden and almost inexplicable suicide, amid what appears to be a happy and fulfilled life, is just irresponsible and/or ignorant. Perhaps the suicide prevention movement has not done enough to reach influential writers. Anyone who's aware that more people die by suicide each year (almost 40,000) than from car accidents, that it's the second-leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 24 and that reading about capricious suicides without a context of mental illness and at least a nod to help being available can create what's called "suicide contagion" -- a real and dangerous phenomenon -- would never insert a suicide so casually into her writing. I assume Niffenegger did not know, and I hope no one who's struggling with thoughts of suicide will casually pick up this book about an otherwise enchanting subject. less
