review 1: I don't recall what my expectations for this book were, but it delivered on them. Niffenegger's prose style reminds me very much of A.S. Byatt's writing, and I was completely drawn into the narrative of the two selfish and entitled young twins - and despite the fact that I describe them as such, I was in love with them as characters. I enjoyed the "just this side of gothic" narrative, and had a truly difficult time putting this book down.
review 2: It's hard to live up to a debut novel like The Time Traveler's Wife. That being said, I enjoyed Her Fearful Symmetry a lot. I like the way that Niffenegger employs some of the classic gothic literary tropes, and she truly brought Highgate to life. I found the plot a little lazy, in that it just moves along and winds
... moreslowly, although I feel like it's clear that this is intentional and not a byproduct of sloppy writing. All in all, the characters are inviting and complex; Martin being a favourite. I have the impulse to suggest that Niffenegger did a good job in her portrayal of a person living with mental illness, but I'm not in a position to comment on her sensitivity of the subject matter. less
