review 1: I found the ending (both endings) to be a bit of a let-down, especially in that the revelation of the connection between the two storylines felt sort of forced and cheesy, almost like the author was trying too hard to pin the entire meaning or point of the book on that one moment. It also started to feel almost praising of British colonialism in a weird way. However, I did enjoy the book more than I was expecting to given that it didn't at first seem like the kind of book I usually enjoy. I found Max's chapters much more interesting than Jeremy's, though, which were slightly painful to get through at first. Towards the end his part of the story grew on me, at least up until that last scene.
review 2: Schulman's book deserves more than three stars, possibly four
... more, just for the immediacy she gives us in these parallel stories. One takes us to the bush where lions are among the problems to be faced in building a railroad. The other is among the mountain gorillas during a war. Strong characters engage well in these locations to make us appreciate preservation and progress in the lives of our protagonists and in our own. less

Very different, two different time periods set in Africa. Really good ending

As always (and what I love about Audrey Schulman), an unexpected read

Interesting, but ultimately strange book.
