review 1: There are not enough stars for this book. Brilliant interweaving of two stories, one set at the turn of the century - one in the 1980s or 90s - in Africa. This book was forced on me by my book group and I didn't think I was interested in reading about lions killing people - boy was I wrong. The lions are just a small part of the overall conflict that drives this book so hard you can't put it down. Very, very rarely do I find it hard to put a book down these days. The main characters in each of the two stories are fascinating. I don't want to say much more because the author drops revelations of each character slowly as you go along and that's part of the thrill of it. The conclusion was brilliant. I thought about this book and what it meant for weeks after... moreward.
review 2: Fascinating, but flawed. I read this book after running across the story of the Tsavo maneaters, the navel's underlying source text. In particular (and completely independant of the Tsavo incident, I'm aware that the stories ARE different). My problem is not so much with the 2000 plot line, but in the 1899 plot line the reader is encouraged to sympathize with the plight of the hunter. I feel like this should have focused more on the consequences of colonialism and the price of attaining personal glory at the expense of colonists than the marginalization of homosexuals in Victorian society. Maybe I'll write that book though. less

Weirdly enough it was the lion queer colonial stuff that left me kind of cold.
