review 1: This book reminded me so much of the Help. This book shows that children can fight for a cause and that they are not to young to understand the world around them as long as adults are willing to sit down and explain situations to them. I felt the author did a great job of showing how naive, innocent and self centered Glory was at the being of the story but as Glory learned more about her community be developed into a independent and humble person. Awesome read!!!
review 2: It took me a long time to like and relate to the main character in this historical fiction / coming-of-age story about desegregation in Mississippi. Glory just didn't feel authentic. One problem for me was her age. She's 12 and might act like an authentic 12 year old in the 1960s, but she ac
... morets too young for modern kids, who hit puberty much earlier. Also, Glory seems too much a mix of traits to be understandable: of naivity (takes her far too long to understand why the pool is closing) and insight, able to keep big secrets (her sister driving off with a boy) and unable (tells the boy's secret to the wrong people). It's also hard to believe Glory could grow up in the Southern culture and be untouched by racial segregation until the summer of her 12th year. less
