review 1: Baldrigr and Halvir’s adventures continue, with the animal spirit Liethregveel. The names have now been shortened to Bald (Vald), Havi (Habi) and Rulca (Rulka) respectively. (I’m not certain what the changes in spelling mean; maybe the editors were a little sloppy?) Troubles abound in their travels as they battle magical enemies, including angry magicians who’ve got a score to settle with Havi. The magical component also gets more complicated as more is revealed about the curse surrounding Bald’s demonic sword. The magic part of the story gets so complicated that I have a hard time following it. I’d advise ignoring the business about the magic since sorcery is fake and not something non-magical practitioners can understand in any case. But the sword and the cure a... morere so intricately tied up with the storyline itself that putting it out of your mind really isn’t an option. So while the sex is as great as ever and the action just leaps off the page, the magic part is seriously twisting the story. When an interfering sorcerer with a serious Phantom-of-the-Opera fetish, slave demons and more dragons get involved, a story about a cursed sword becomes far less simple. However, complexity and drama can make for a riveting storyline. I suppose if you stick with this there’ll be a resolution that will wrap up matters. It’s been a long wait, though. Volume 2 came out in September 2008 and the English version of volume 3 still hasn’t made its way to American shores.
review 2: I truly enjoyed the fantasy world Yamane created in Crimson Spell, and this excellent sequel expands that world, and the characters. The story begins right where volume 1 left off. The plot advances as Havi realizes the magician behind the curse may still be alive and needs to be confronted. Crimson Spell has a disinctly "Dungeons & Dragons" feel to it as they travel the land searching for answers and have adevntures along the way: fighting demons to protect a village, getting robbed by a wanderer they stop to help, etc. There is a lot of action, including violent sword fighting & magical duels, in the book. Havi and Vald's relationship also gets a jolt when Havi kisses Vald when he's not in demon form and Vald rebuffs him and runs off confused. He still doesn't know what he does with Havi when he's the demon (oh, and there are more than a couple hot scenes of that! Then, Havi is kidnapped by the villain..Overall, this is an engrossing series. It's so sad that it is no longer in print in English. I truly hope with the popularity of Finder, Crimson Spell will be picked up. I'd love to read volumes 3 and 4. Highly recommended - if you can find a copy. less
