A Trash 'n' Treasures Mystery
review 1: Another genre-defining book by writing team "Barbara Allan." Everything that makes the "cozy" murder mystery popular is here in spades: a quirky, lovable amateur sleuth who shows up both the police and a killer by solving a seemingly perfect crime; a charming fictional small town that the reader will wish he or she could visit, populated by its fair share of oddballs; and good-natured humour with little to no sex or profanity. Men who want a macho book will not find it here, as this book reads as though written for a female audience, some chapters more than others. Still, I'm a man and I enjoyed it all the same. Some readers will eventually become annoyed by the books repeated references to Agatha Christie and Rex Stout by name (We get it already, you like Miss Marple ... moreand Nero Wolfe). The nit-picky reader may find other very minor flaws in the book. Relax and allow yourself to enjoy the book on its own terms and you'll find a very good read here, I think, especially if you are a fan of the genre.
review 2: I have mixed feelings about this one. I enjoyed the story in general, and found the two main characters, Brandy & Vivian, funny and quirky. I haven't read the previous books in the series, so the numerous references to past adventures were lost on me. The way that Brandy addresses the reader directly was a bit off-putting at times....just not a style I personally enjoy very much. My main hang-up with this was regarding the Kindle formatting. Throughout the book, there were randomly hyphenated words! Not at the end of a line of type, just scattered in the text. I don't know if those particular words were at the ends of lines in the print version, but something didn't translate well to the Kindle format. It was very distracting. Overall, a cute mystery story that was a fast, easy read. less
