review 1: I remember as a teen reading Lady of Hay, so when I saw this on offer I thought I'd give it a go. It had the same page-turning level of suspense, but with a more mature eye it was not as satisfying as I recalled Erskine to be. It felt overlong, the escalation of the main modern drama seemed almost repetitive and I chuckled at how often people "threw" themselves into chairs- surprisingly lax from an author of so many books. The choice of topic was bold and adding the element of a woman's place in the Christian church was interesting, but it failed to really explore it in detail. Overall, a fun, undemanding read for a lazy Sunday that could have lost 100 pages easily.

... moreide me with the perfect degree of escapism. For one, they confirm all that I imagine Britain to be (I've yet to visit there). Two, they're eerie without ever being terrifying (I'm completely accepting of the supernatural elements in these stories; suspension of disbelief is not a problem). Three, they're familiar each time without being overly formulaic or predictable. I do pay attention to people's reviews and choose accordingly when picking my Erskine reads. Back when I started reading these, she'd published only a few. I only recently picked up a couple more of her books, and since it's been about a decade and a half since I last read anything by her, I've got lots of choice now. Brava, Barbara! less

Barbara's books are really interesting and it is very hard to put them down once started.

The nearest I can stomach to romance fiction. Love me some Erskine.
