review 1: A very good object lesson for young children/adolescents. When confronted with the fear of turning in a friend for a hate crime against a Native American, Dusty has a decision to make. A white eagle invades his dreams and takes him back in time to see what atrocities have been committed against the Poncas in the past. Even though Dusty was the driver of the get-away car after the crime, his conscience (and the white eagle) lead him to do the right thing in the end. Barbara Hay writes in such a way that she shows young people that doing the right thing may be scary, but it is always the way to go, and does it in such a way as to not be "preachy" or feel like a lecture. I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
review 2: I was given this book i... moren exchange for writing a review.I enjoyed reading this book, especially because I grew up in Oklahoma. I have read about discrimination in the newspapers and heard about it on the news but have never witnessed it, so reading this first-hand fictionalized story about it really opened up my eyes, even as an adult. Not knowing whether or not the main character was Native American was part of what kept my interest as the story progressed. I also appreciated the extra "Questions for Discussion" in the back of the book.I had my 16-year-old niece read it, as well (who lives in Shawnee, OK) to open up her eyes. She liked the book, too. However, she did say that the "White Eagle" parts got a little long. She was anxious to discover the outcome!I think overall this book is a great work of fiction for young readers (younger than my niece) to understand discrimination and how easily things can get out of hand. Again, I enjoyed reading it. less
