review 1: In the grand tradition of a contemporary story being a refraction of a historical one, this novel tells the tragedy of two pregnant women, about 100 years apart, and their entanglement with homosexual men. There is plenty of social history here as well as thoughtful commentary about 19th c. Pregnancies. But there is not enough mystery. Both stories spin out of control as the stories near the end.

The whole book read as though it had been knocked out in a dash by the author with little thought to research or character development and was a bore as far as plot. ... morehich had nothing to do to advance the story than was spent in genuine character development. It is a very good thing this was penned under Rendell's pseudonym. I certainly wouldn't recommend either money or time being invested in this novel. less

I am so disappointed by the ending. It just ended. I did enjoy the story within the story.
