review 1: I simply couldn't get into this. Much as I usually enjoy biographies of singular individuals, it seemed I was in for a nonstop parade of people that Janet met, places that Janet had been, and so on. While many of these people and places were noteworthy, there didn't seem to be much happening beyond surface commentary. About sixty pages in, I simply had to face the fact that I wasn't getting much out of the book. While not something I actively disliked, it wasn't anything I was enjoying, either.
review 2: I tried valiantly to read and like this book. Based on Michael Dirda's review, my book club is reading it. Halfway through, I am giving up. It is boring, boring, boring. It reads like a "Who's Who" of the time period, but you never get enough detail to get
... more interested in these people, and it is impossible to keep them all straight. It is basically just a list of names of people who crossed paths with Janet Ross. No real insight into the character of Janet is given and nothing to make me want to keep reading. I cannot imagine what Dirda was thinking! less
