review 1: This review is for three volumes (#1-#3), all of which can be read in considerably less time than a single regular novel. The plucky heroine, who shows her integrity in trying to "do the right thing" and her compassion in trying to help others, is easy to root for. She collects a motley group of followers in the course of her space adventures, including a rodent of unusual size, a pathologically insecure robot, and a brawny Gumby-like creature who adores her. The story is imaginative, the background aliens are of endless variety, and the art is fantastic in every sense of the word. Kids should get a kick out of her adventurous story, but will also take notice of the qualities that could make Zita a bit of a role model.
review 2: I heard about Zita the Spacegirl... more through a friend of a friend that heard I needed to read some graphic novels and even though I'm not a big comics person I decided to check it out. I'm so glad I did! This book is a joy of a ride--with a spunky character you totally root for (and who has depths to her that so many characters in this genre unfortunately don't have); a gang of pals, each one unique and funny and intriguing (a giant mouse with a mysterious past, for example); a plot that keeps you turning the pages without even noticing you're turning them. The art is brilliant and brilliantly colorful, with terrific world-building and new details you find each page. This is a comic for both boys and girls, as well as adults. less
