review 1: Oops I read the sequel first. Surprisingly, I didn't enjoy this any less without knowing the first part of the adventure. Zita is spunky with a good heart and interesting friends. The plot feels a little formulaic and predictable but is still very satisfying, and probably not predictable for a child. I'd have no problem suggesting this to a mid-older range elementary school child. I loved the artwork!
review 2: I took this out of the library to read with my child at bedtime. FIrst of all, it was never clear to me until we finished the book that it was the second in a series. Not usually a big deal with serialized books if the story is told in the correct order and the story is strong enough to stand on its own legs - but I have to say that it doesn’t, ... moreand going into the second book, thinking it was the first for most of it, I felt as though I was missing something until the end when it told me to look forward to book 3. It is a genre graphic novel that is sort of of the “cute hero” variety. It was a story that engaged my four year old, but we often found ourselves scratching our heads at some of the thin areas of the characters and the plot. It did do the job of getting to bed, but unfortunately I think that in beautiful books like Hugo Cabret and The Arrival, we have something that this is nowhere near even the foundation and workmanship of this book. I will not be reading the others in the series, and perhaps myself and my son are not the intended demographic. less
