review 1: I found the stream-of-consciousness a bit grating, but also interesting and engaging enough to pull me through to the end. For the first half - maybe even three-quarters - of the book, I just didn't care much. I never felt like I got to know the narrator, because he was so busy pontificating on drugs or poetry or how vile he was, and I certainly didn't get anywhere near the other characters. But after I got to bombing, things changed. Somehow that event anchored the story and the characters, and provided a focal point from which everything afterwards flowed. So I can't say I'd recommend this book but, after a painful beginning, it wound up surprising me.
review 2: I read this book while I was on vacation in Spain. The book is set in Spain, and I found the descr... moreiptions of place and people to be spot on. As a poet who now writes fiction, Lerner's prose is very rich. His main character (who is a poet) is fully exposed to the reader -- every interior thought and feeling -- making him very human, and at times very unlikeable. What I found most interesting is the way the character handles being a foreigner in a foreign land...he doesn't speak Spanish, and so with his very vivid imagination he takes what he hears, understands about fifty percent of it, then makes up three possible things it could mean, getting himself into some very strange, sometime humorous situations. I laughed many times while reading this book, and even though the character is completely self-absorbed, the story telling was compelling. less
