review 1: First, I think that Benjamin Alire Sáenz is a very good writer and a pleasure to read. This short story collection however seemed a bit forced in the sense that the Kentucky Club (a bar just across the border from El Paso in Juarez, Mexico), which was intended as a unifying theme, was in fact peripheral in all cases and did not unify. Moreover the characters were all pretty much of a muchness -- troubled, gayish but not quite gay Mexican American teenagers who I suspect all represent aspects of the author and who might as well have been one character. The stories are good when read individually but I think the collection is misguided. There is a good novel hiding in here somewhere.
review 2: This is the first book I have read by Ben, which strikes me as od
... mored since he is a family (albeit, distant) friend. Living far from many of the borders he discusses in his stories, I realize that his world is very different than mine. There was an overriding sense of sadness and other emotions that seem far removed from my life. I really enjoyed his last story, The Hurting Club, which ironically was the only one that seemed to end with hope. less
