review 1: I like stories from other cultures. This one starts in post-WWII Iceland in voice of Bjarni who has received a letter from former lover Helga. Eventually, but much later, he decides to write her back. We see how complicated and sad and beautiful life is for this very bright and simple farmer, who struggled over and over with the decisions he made around his love for Helga. We get to struggle along with him, wondering if an early decision was right or wrong. I got to reconsider some of the many important decisions I made in my life. A lovely book.
review 2: In English the title is, Reply To A Letter From Helga. Listened to the audio version of this novella set in Iceland. It is a story of love, lust and loss. Bjarni had an illicit affair with Helga (both married
... more to others at the time). She wrote him a letter asking him to leave his farm and start a new life with her in a city. This reply, written decades later, explains why he didn't make that choice. A bit graphic at times but not offensive. less
