review 1: It was OK. Harriet's diary entries seemed to drag. I found myself rushing through towards the end and having to skim Harriet's entries just to finally get to the end and finish. Interesting twist at the end, but how the author worked her way to reveal it was rather banal. If it was going to be like that, then wipe out Harriet's entries and save us half the time just reading Maddie's point of view. Other than what Harriet wrote about Edward and Julia, I really saw no point for Harriet's entries (Catholic / Protestant, Tenant / Landowner, etc).
review 2: A based-on-a-true-story historical fiction novel about the mysterious death of young Charlotte, and the two women who were involved in her tragic death. The novel is told alternately by these two women: mother
... moreof Charlotte/mistress of the castle, and maidservant in the castle. I liked reading about life in the 19th century and discovering how a proper lady could be imprisoned for murder under those circumstances. While I got lost in some turns in this story, I enjoyed being submersed into a different era and watching the tragic story of Charlotte's death unfold. I wonder what it would be like to read Charlotte's perspective? less

This book was OK but Barbara Vine (Ruth Rendell) does it so much better in Asta's story.

Oh, I wanted it to be better. It wasn't bad. It was all right.
