review 1: It was hard to get into this non-thriller-but-kind-of-a-thriller? novel at first because the old english verbiage was so dense, but I'm glad I kept reading because about half way through the book, a bombshell is dropped that literally gave me chills. In this age of Caylee Anthony, we hear more gruesome tales of child abuse and death than the one told here, but it doesn't make it any less awful. The Butterfly Cabinet was a solid read, but not one I'd like to repeat as none of the characters (save maybe Peig?) was particularly redeeming, but I think that was maybe the point.
review 2: Tried to get into this three times, but it has too many things I have no patience with: many characters with nothing to remember them by, some distantly related due to some dark an
... mored sinister event that is unknown, written partially in dialect. Since it is a book club selection which I mightily try to finish, I read some reviews and found that most reviewers thought it was ultimately not worthwhile. Good enough for me; close that book! less

Very deep. Takes a good bit of quiet to accept the story, but the lesson is well worth it.

I couldn't even finish it. Threw it in the garbage because that's where it belongs.

Based on true story, very interesting rendering written in two voices.
