The Glorious Victorious Darcys
review 1: A great steampunk romp. Simon Darcy's dreams lie in ruin. His father is dead and the family fortune is gone, sacrificed to finance Simon's dream to build a great monorail to rescue London from traffic congestion and pollution. He has to win Queen Victoria's competition to restore the money. Simon wants to find the infamous time travel device that brought the 20th century Peace Rebels back to 1851 in an attempt to prevent the problems of the 20th century. His plan attracts the attention of London's most notorious reporter, the Clockwork Canary. Unknown to everyone, the Canary is actually Wilhelmina Goodenough, Simon's first love. Willie is a Freak; her mother was a 20th century rebel and her father is a Victorian, she has unusual talents that allow her to enter the minds o... moref people she touches. Her editor assigns her to follow Simon and track the progress of his quest for the readers of the tabloid. Throw in some air pirates and lots of bad guys and much intrigue and you get a crackerjack yarn.
review 2: I really loved Her Sky Cowboy, the first book in The Glorious Victorious Darcys series. This second book in the series was a bit slower in my mind, the characters not quite as engaging and the action a little less exciting. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the story, it just didn’t catch my interest as much as the first book. Simon Darcy, like his sister Amelia, is seeking an invention of historical significance in order to bring fame and fortune to his family. When tabloid reporter Willie G., also known as the Clockwork Canary, proposes to tag along to chronicle his adventures, Simon soon realizes the reporter is actually his former lover Wilhemina Goodenough. As they search for the time-travel engine that allowed 1960’s “Mods” to travel to the past and change the Victorian world forever, Simon discovers there’s more to Willie/Mina than he realized; she’s not only a mixed race “Freak,” the product of a Vic and a Mod, but she also has the ability to see other’s memories. This ability will come in handy as they interview Mods and search underground catacombs, looking for the engine that was believed to be destroyed years ago. Of course, the more they work together, the more determined Simon is to find a way to keep her in his life for good. The world of Vics, Mods and Freaks is a wonderful mash-up of Victorians with the influence of the modern technology and mores of the 1960’s, with their make love not war ideology. Its fun to see what might happen if such a thing had occurred and makes me wonder what the future would hold for these people. We also got glimpses of Simon’s twin brother Jules’ adventure, which I believe will be the next story told in the series, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. less
