review 1: I feel like how much you love/hate this book is going to depend on how seriously you take the characters. I get why people wouldn't like Nick; I didn't like him at the beginning, but I don't think I really took him seriously. Same for Kit…seems kinda overly perfect and *too* much of a complete opposite for Nick. I did enjoy this…I really liked the end when we learned why Nick was driving to Sacramento, it seemed to validate things for him in my mind a bit more. I wish there had been more as this is SUCH a HFN ending and I wish there was a little bit more of a sense of permanence.
review 2: What a beautifully written short story. Have to say the title was a little deterring and I'm pretty sure I would not have read this if I hadn't been subscribing to the ad... morevent calendar.Nick is on a cross-country journey to San Francisco where he intends to finish everything. In a highway rest area, he meets Kit - a very out there guy who pushes Nick in all the wrong ways. Kit's vehicle has died and Nick gives him a lift to his parents' house.The characters here were engaging, you really felt the connection between them and even if some coincidence felt a little unlikely... It is the job of a reader to suspend their disbelief and the job of a writer to make it good enough for the reader to do this without realizing it. Very sweet, loved it. less
