review 1: This is one of the classic paleo cookbooks. It has a lot of recipes (it is big and heavy!) which work very well and it is, of course, because Bill is a great photographer, full of great images. The recipes are easy, well laid out and easy to read (something I am increasingly coming to appreciate. I like the fact that they make a statement of caution at the beginning of the dessert section. It is a misconception that we can eat as many desserts as there are paleo dessert recipes and stay healthy/achieve our health goals. The only beef I have with it is that it is so big and heavy. I like my recipes books small enough that they won't topple over my book stand and are easy to handle. :-)
review 2: This is an excellent book to read if you are interested in Paleo. W
... morehat is Paleo? Well, there's a lot of background information and science to it, but in a nutshell, it's eating much in the way that Paleolithic man did way back when. The premise behind the eating is that we have not evolved enough to be able to consume the amount of grains and dairy that we currently do (at least in the Standard American Diet.) So, when you eat Paleo, you eat no grains and no dairy (and no sugar.) It's pretty much all meat and veggies, a few fruits, nuts, and a few tubers (no legumes either.) I'm not sure about all the science, but I can tell you that eating Paleo is a very healthy way to eat.I began experiencing gut trouble about 10 years ago. After a colonoscopy (I know TMI,) and a battery of tests (including the test for Celiac disease,) the doctor was able to come up with nothing other than Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Well, duh, I could have told him I had that (not with a fancy name, but I knew my bowels were "irritated.") Anyway, I just chalked it up to bad luck (and genes,) and figured I would have to live my entire life always knowing where the nearest bathroom was in case my bowels decided to be irritated on the spur of the moment. A few years ago, I heard about Paleo. I looked into it, but decided it was a little too extreme for me. Over the last few years, it's become more mainstream with more and more blogs and books coming out designated as "Paleo." So, I decided to do more research. What I found was a very informed group of people who are dedicated to passing their knowledge about nutrition and fitness along to the masses (often for no profit at all.) So, I have been experimenting here and there with Paleo eating (and also Primal--which isn't too different.) I find that when I do eat Paleo, I feel much better and have more energy. I have not lost weight, but I contribute this to my inability to adhere strictly to Paleo (mainly because the rest of my family is still eating the Standard American Diet.) I'm gradually trying to transition us all to the Paleo way of eating, but it isn't easy. I have a child with ADHD and sensory issues, who mainly lives on carbs and cheese (which are both forbidden in Paleo.) I have made progress, though, and I will continue to try and achieve Paleo bliss. On to this book. Bill Staley and Hayley Mason (I think they are a couple, but why would she change her name: Haley Staley? I don't know if this is the case, but it's cute either way,) have put together a wonderfully informative book about the Paleo lifestyle and included many delicious recipes. I've only tried a few, but just in reading the other recipes, I can only assume they will be delicious as well. Many traditional "diet" books are often so dry, but I found this book to be written in a very down-to-earth style. I enjoyed reading it and cannot wait to try the rest of the recipes.I recommend this book to anyone who has gut problems or problems with inflammation. It's worth a try to explore Paleo. I don't believe there is a better path to health out there than following the Paleo lifestyle. less
