review 1: A boy and his dog go for a walk on the beach. When they unearth some interesting rocks, the adventure begins. The rocks are fossils, and when the fossils see the light of day, they become real. At first it's curious, as ancient ferns sprout right there on the beach. A dragon fly is next, but things begin to get a little more interesting when they find a fossil of a foot of a dinosaur.I picked this book up because I am a fan of Thomson's work. His art tells the story without the need of words. This makes this book, and others like it, perfect for so many writing tasks within the classroom.I finished the book so I could discuss the story with some of my classes.I would recommend this to Sandy. I think she would like having to come up with the text of the story her... moreself.
review 2: Same author/illustrator of Chalk. A wordless picture book follows a young boy and his dog who take a walk by a lake. The boy discovers a fossil inside a rock - that of a fern/plant. As the fossil is broken open after he trips and falls, the fern/plant appear or comes alive. The same thing happens as he breaks open a fossil of a dragonfly and then a pterodactyl. However, the flying dinosaur takes the dog away. How can the boy get his dog back down from the sky? He smashes the fossil. That breaks the spell and the boy gets his pal back. less
