review 1: I bought volumes 1-5 of Fables from a comic book shop just off Times Square in NYC, volumes 6-8 I got from a comic book shop somewhere in Toronto/Hamilton on the way to the airport home. The other volumes I picked up in various Waterstones stores around the UK. However, nowhere I have been to has had any volumes after this one and if I recall correctly on my first read through of this I was a bit... OD'ed on graphic novels. I had re-read all the Batman ones I own, Red Son, V for Vendetta and then started onto Fables again, so upon reaching the conclusion of this volume I was quite happy to not have any more in the series to read at that point. Upon this read through I am kicking myself...You might think the Fables in the Mundy world would have a peaceful time of it now tha... moret the Adversary has been taken care of - yeah, right! Our new villain has an amazingly good entrance and the conclusion of this volume leaves you wanting so much more!I want to say that there are some light moments here, and if there are any it must be during the tour of the Mundy world, but even that is tempered by who the tour is being given to. The title 'Dark Ages' is pretty darned apt if you ask me!
review 2: Well done, but the dark and gloom was a bit much, even for a volume entitled "The Dark Ages." After a point you simply begin to feel somber and dread, without it being as impactful. For example, I was really concerned about Mister Dark arriving in Fabletown, and yet when it finally happened, I was really most saddened about the death of Kay. I was torn up when Boy Blue lost his arm, but by the time he passed away, I was more sad for Flycatcher and Pinocchio than for Blue, and I love Blue. As an aside, I was amazed by his analysis of Rose Red, thought that's not how I'd ever thought of her previously. I'm definitely intrigued for the next one, but at the same time, this one made me tired. In that sense, it's probably a terrifically accurate representation of the aftermath of war: sadness, exhaustion, and dread. Three-and-a-half stars. less

This one, out of necessity, was darker and less fun than the others. But the Mowgli bit was cute.
