review 1: Gotta say, this isn't my kind of book, so I was extremely hesitant. When I finally cracked the cover, I was sucked into some kind of eerie land of Oz where the young main character, Leah, toggles between some scary horror movie child of the corn and a perfect angel sent from heaven to save the world. I loved how Coffey nailed peoples' reactions to the unknown quality of this girl, and the incredibly believeable characters. The devotion of Barney as he took care of Mabel was both touching and heart-rendering. But my favorite character was Allie, the best friend of Leah. I firmly believe Allie, with her outright positiveness and earnestness, made the premise of the book bloom with hope. I hate to say the end disappointed me just a tad, but overall it's an incredible ... moreread!
review 2: Maybe I've read too many books from the Christian thriller genre, but throughout the first 3/4 of this book I thought it was going to be something much different from the book it turned out to be. It feels like a book that could have had a really powerful message, but instead the message is that gambling is ok (and sometimes what God wants you to do so you can give to others), God speaks through unbelievers better than believers, church members are hateful and/or hypocrites, and if God is speaking to you through someone else (regardless of whether it matches with what the Bible says or not) you better sit up and listen or you will die. Bad theology. less

Kind of strange. Although different, in a way it reminded me of "Something Wicked This Way Comes"

A beautiful book that delicately captures what is often misunderstood--faith.
