review 1: Ouran High School Host Club vol. 16 Summary: In this screwball romantic comedy, Haruhi, a poor girl at a rich kids' school, is forced to repay an $80,000 debt by working for the school's swankiest, all-male club - as a boy! There she discovers just how wealthy the six members are and how different the rich are from everybody else... Tamaki's father and grandmother, the heads of the powerful Suoh Corp., are behind the Host Club's suspension and the plan for Haruhi to be shipped off abroad. Now the Host Club members must pull out all the stops to save their beloved leader from his family's infighting.Rating: 4 starsOpening Line: "Father! ... morend of this volume and the author's note that I realized this was the penultimate volume of the series. It definitely had that vibe throughout the whole thing, though, in the best possible way. Things are starting to wrap up, and this volume deals with a few of the biggest storylines in the whole series: Tamaki's secretive and manipulative family and Haruhi and Tamaki's relationship.Haruhi has grown a lot over the course of the series, and in this volume, she was finally able to see herself objectively. By dressing like she did before she met the host club, she was able to look back upon that person she used to be. Yes, the host club forced her to change, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Haruhi has become a more self-aware, caring person. She loves all of her friends, and would do anything for them. I have to admit, I loved everyone's reactions to Haruhi's reversion into her old style of dressing. They were all so horrified, I couldn't help but laugh. It was a relief to finally know what had been going on with Tamaki's family this whole time. Tamaki's determination to keep his grandmother in the family and not just win her approval, but gain her love, is a testament to the kind, generous person he is beneath that silly, extravagant exterior. When he finally made that connection with her, and they were able to bond over sonething as silly as the theme songs of classic Japanese soap operas, I was cheering inside. If the Suoh family survives and becomes happy (and I think they will), it will all be due to Tamaki.I loved the simple, straightforward conversation between Haruhi and Hikaru, when he asked her if she loved Tamaki. It was such a hard, brave position for Hikaru to put himself in, and he handled it, and Haruhi's response, with grace and friendship. Knowing Haruhi's feelings, Hikaru put his own aside to focus on helping Tamaki, and there's nothing more you could have asked from a friend. Finally, I loved the "rescue" of Tamaki from the mansion. I loved that everyone, from host club members to house servants to classmates all banded together to make sure Tamaki could get to the airport in time to see his sick mother. The lengths everyone went to to assist him is a testament to how widespread Tamaki's influence of love and joy had become. And I loved that everyone seems to realize that Haruhi was the one Tamaki needed by his side the most. Hikaru told her she needed to make a choice for Tamaki, and she finally did it. I can't tell if the words on the last page of this volume were spoken aloud by Haruhi, or just in her head, but regardless of whether she really told him she loved him, her actions that day proved it. With every step by Tamaki's side, Haruhi showed him how much she cared, and it makes me so very happy to see. :)I'm so excited to read the last volume, though it will be sad to say goodbye to characters I have come to love. What I am most looking forward to, though, is a grand reveal, when everyone at Ouran is finally let in on the secret that Haruhi is actually a girl! That had better happen, at least, or I'll be a little pissed! Oh, did I never mention that before? Haruhi has been passed off as a boy thus whole time to all of Ouran, minus the host club members. Whoops! :P less
