review 1: A truly unique book, unlike anything I've ever read. And whatever the feel-good book of the year was for 2009, this was the last book on the other end of the bookshelf. A profound and harrowing diary consisting of one unnamed narrator's descriptions of life before and after an unspecified apocalypse has befallen the world. No zombies, roving mobs, or aliens- it's much, much worse. Illness and decay begin to reign. Most believe it's Judgement Day, but Jesus is a no show; instead, it's caterpillars as big as your arm. Glass rains out of the sky- when it's not raining sand or plastic or teeth. Tsunamis of dead animals. Green skies for days on end; sometimes the sun disappears altogether. Whatever landscape isn't being scorched when the sun does appear is flooded, with unspeak... moreable flotsam. Weeks of dead silence are broken by distant catastrophic sounds- like the earth itself, falling apart. And through this new nightmare world, our chronicler recollects the lives of those around him, now passed; it would seem that the decay was already there, waiting to bloom. Brilliantly misanthropic and hugely fascinating. If you're into Nicholas Sparks, you will NOT like this book.
review 2: I can still hear the professor saying to me in Contemporary Literary Criticism, "Never let the author beat you." As I was reading this book I thought, "Who cares?" There are a lot of great reviews for this book. People see more in it than I do. The section entitled "Television Milk" was the most powerful to me and the best writing in the book. Other than that I just didn't feel like trying to sort out the author's intentions. less
