review 1: Historical M/M English romance with a Cinderfella plot (poor guy gets with a rich guy) and I must add a warning that there are some serious child abuse themes and torture violence that are part of the story which is very disturbing. Very disturbing and I almost couldn't finish the story. The sweet romance with the young very poor Jem and the weary and almost desperately suicidal, Sir Alan Watleigh, kept me reading because they were a perfect fit. Although it is rough in the beginning, but isn't it always when we're getting used to a new person in our lives?!The valet as a lover idea is a great one to get around the very strict laws against M/M loving in the pre-modern times. Although I doubt that it happened very often because the social differences would make it difficult... more to have much in common. Although the fact that Jem can read 'a little' bit already shows that he isn't the regular poverty stricken slum resident.308 pages and freebie from All Romance site3 stars
review 2: I cant give 5 stars bcs the book was too sad sometimes and made me cry(ignore the grammar of the review).Alan is a noble and a man that served his country in the war and had men under his command. He is in his late thirties and not new to men plesure, also if he never gave the lead to one of his partner a thing he will do with Jem in the end of the book. This is the last day he will do something like that and after will suicide. He is alone, his parents are dead, as his brother, and the horror of the war taunts his dreams, and makes him sleepless and sad, so for him this life is useless. His decision seems took, till during his search for his last bed mate he sees a guy in a tavern laughing with his friends, that part of the city is well known for whores, thieves and much more, but that guy seems happy and is a thing Alan finds himself attracted to. Jem is the name of the young boy only 19 years old, but already whore since was too young to be right, if this thing can even be considered remotely right. He is accustomed to sell his body for protection and money, nothing pays like that, so when Alan offers him a night with him he gladly follows the man to his huge and rich home. They have sex, and at the same time is so different, like never was with his other clients, and also Alan feels something changes in him, in the end he will not suicide anymore. The boy doesnt have shooling , and you can see that in the fact he cant read or write, other then simple things, and most of the time talks in slang and using too many swears. They talk about their lives, they fight and in the end Alan cant let him go, so he offers him a job as his valet and Jem that didnt want to leave, accepts. The days go on and Alan opens more, talking about what happened in the war, and more. They're getting nearer each day passing. And when all seems good something happens that made me cry.One day Jem's old mates, find where he is living now, and go to him, trying to get something for themself out of this. Jem doesnt know what to do, if to make them go away or let them in the house, and in the end he does the second while thinking about all the nights and all the things they did together to survive the streets. After some moments Alan comes back home and finds them, he makes the other two guys leave the house and at the same time says to Jem to take his things and leave too. Jem stares at him, he doesnt want to go but doesnt want to argue doesnt want to defend himself saying that wasnt his fault they found him, bcs he is too sad and destroyed by the fact that Alan still doesnt trust him, ye, ha had some reason too, on the start after their first time together, he had tried to stole from Alan, so he doesnt talk. He says he will take his things and leave, then stops his steps reflecting and holding tears saying he doesnt have anything anymore, the truth hitting him, and another thing he doesnt say, he doesnt want to leave Alan. Here i cried and damn it was so sad and i pitied Jem so much and at the same time i was saying to myself "Stop him, come on you love him". In the end Alan understands that wasnt Jem fault those guys were there, and he stops him from leaving saying he is sorry, but still there is not talk about feelings, also if the reader can understand they're in love and Alan would never had let Jem leave. This was one of the saddest and best scenes. In all the book u understand that their relationship is changing from one nigh stand to something important, and when Jem risks to die, u see Alan disperation and his thoughts about what he'll do if Jem dies, bcs now that man is all for him. A lof of thing happen i dont wanna spoiler, but let's say that after Alan rescues Jem, we see the boy say to Alan that he loves him, and Alan with eyes full of tears pratically saying the same also if not with words. The book had a real good end and u feel happy reading it, bcs after all the pain, the sadness and all the terrible things Jem and the little girl Annie had to endure, they found a family. Annie will be with Badgeman(Alan's friend that served with him in the war and now is his butler), under Ala's roof and Jem with the man he loves.I'd like to read other books from this author.[Alan had assured him of a home for the rest of his life. They would be a pair, as devoted to each other as any married couple.]{"Incorregible, Jem. What am I to do with you?"..."Keep me right close by your side so you can keep and eye on me, I reckon". .."That i can do. That I'll be happy to do."} less

This is a sweet romance and well written. The villain is a little over the top for my taste.

"Rent boy" fiction isn't my thing, but this story is beautifully crafted and I enjoyed it.
