review 1: Bear is a loner. He has always been alone & he doesn't know what he's missing. So, when a mouse appears & repeatedly reappears in his house, his reaction is, of course, growly & unwelcoming. With his persistence, the mouse finally gets through to the bear & bear finds that in welcoming mouse into his home & giving of himself, he makes a friend. By the end of this story, it is the bear who is begging mouse to stay and keep him company.
review 2: Audience: PrimaryGenre: "A Visitor For Bear" can be classified as a beast tale in the traditional literature genre. It is classified as such because an animal, Bear, takes on human characteristics such as living and caring for himself in a small home.Pre-Reading Strategy: First LinesI have chosen the first line pre-readi
... moreng strategy for "A Visitor For Bear." In this strategy, the first line of the story is read aloud to the children. Pausing after the opening line, the children are asked to predict what they believe the story will be about. The kids are able to use inferences from the picture and the text to imagine a possible ending to the story. I decided to use this specific strategy for "A Visitor For Bear" since the plot line revolves around Bear's unexpected transformation from a lonely and reserved to a company-loving bear. It is likely that the first line will lead students to believe that Bear is grumpy and hates visitors, and they will likely predict the story to continue with Bear being reserved. After reading the story, it would then be possible to revisit the predictions and discuss how often times stories may not end as we predict based on the first part of the book. This strategy also helps children learn to identify the main plot concepts based on the introductions of stories.Script:All right, kids, today we are going to read "A Visitor For Bear!" Often times, when reading a story, the introduction (or, in other words, the first few lines) can give you an idea of what the main ideas in the story are going to be. Based on those ideas that we can identify from the opening lines, we can predict what the story will be about. Let's begin and see what we can predict is going to happen after reading the first few lines of the story! "No one ever came to Bear's house."What can we take away from that first line? What do you think Bear is like? Does he sound like a grumpy bear? (take responses from the readers)How do you think Bear's personality is going to change during throughout the story? Why don't we read the next couple lines and see what else we can gather from the first page?!"It had always been that way, and Bear was quite sure he didn't like visitors. He even had a sign."Oh my, Bear doesn't sound too friendly, does he? Look at the picture, do you see the sign on Bear's door? What does it say? (elicit responses)Based on the first page what do we know? 1) Well, first of all, we know that Bear doesn't have much company at his house. What that means is that Bear doesn't have many friends come visit him and spend time with him. 2) We also know that Bear likes being alone and not having visitors. He even has a sign on his front door telling visitors not to come!Knowing that, what do you think is going to happen in the story?Do you think Bear is going to get a visitor? If so, what do you think he is going to do about the visitor?(children's responses)All right, now that we have some predictions about what we think is going to happen with Bear at his home, why don't we continue reading and see if our predictions come true?!"One morning, Bear hear a tap, tap, tapping on his front door."Uh-oh! It sounds like Bear does have a visitor!(finish reading the story) less
