review 1: This book was about a bear that had a “No Visitors Allowed” sign on his front door. Bear was making breakfast when he heard a tap, tap on his door. Bear opened the door and there was a mouse. Bear asks mouse if he read the “No Visitors” sign on his front door. Bear tells the mouse to leave and then he went back to making his breakfast, but when he opens the drawer, there was the mouse; small, gray and bright-eyed. Bear gets the mouse back outside and shuts the door very firmly. Bear opens the cupboard to get bread, but there is the mouse. Every time Bear sends the mouse back outside and plugs up more holes in his house, but the mouse just keeps getting in. Finally, the mouse is in the teapot and Bear makes a deal with him. Mouse says that if he can have ch... moreeese and tea, then he’ll leave and gives Bear his word. Bear and mouse enjoy a nice fire, tea and cheese. The mouse finishes tea and leaves. Bear tells him not to go and tries to catch him. Mouse says that he gave his word and pounds on the “No Visitors” sign. Read this book to see if Bear and Mouse become friends! I do think other people would enjoy this book because it’s very funny that mouse keeps getting in to Bear’s house. I especially liked the tea party since having tea makes me feel so relaxed. This book teaches a lesson about how to make new friends by being nice to others and that being with someone else is more fun than not allowing visitors. I found this book interesting because the mouse was able to get through cracks because he was so small. Both boys and girls would enjoy this book. Children between the ages of four to nine would enjoy this happy ending story.Review by Young Mensan Hayden S., age 5
review 2: I love Bear. I love Mouse. Together, they make magic. Bear's emotions build at just the right pace as he tries time and again to make his breakfast, only to be interrupted by this most unwanted visitor. And time and time again, the kids are always amazed at how Mouse keeps getting into Bear's house, even after the door is locked, the windows are boarded, the chimney is stopped, and the bathtub drain is plugged. You must read this book with feeling, pulling your hair and wailing just as Bear does, although I doubt it's necessary to sprawl on the floor, since your "most attentive" audience might just do that for you, given enough room. They will also remark at how mean Bear is in the beginning, lending itself for a discussion on friendship. I always read Mouse's lines in a high pitched but soft, questioning voice, and I usually accompany it with a big hesitant smile as Mouse inquires about tea, a snack, and finally requests a crackling fire, apparently oblivious to Bear's please for privacy and isolation. While yes, it is long compared to a good number of picture books, take the time to sit down and read this one with some kids, either your own or a class or story time group. You won't regret it as it will stick in their memory and definitely make an impact. less
