review 1: My first foray into the literary world of Brad Meltzer. I love his TV show Decoded, so it was a natural progression to want to check out his novels. I picked this one because I'm a bit of a buff when it comes to the Lincoln and JFK assassinations. Plus I was able to get the e-version for $2.99. Heheh. That way, if it turned out I didn't like it, I wouldn't be losing much.No worries there. I absolutely love this book. LOVE, I tell you! Historical archivist Beecher is involved with a secret group called the Culper Ring, whose mission is to protect the U.S. Presidency. The fictional President in this novel is not a very nice guy beneath his charming, waxed-on smile, and as much as Beecher wants to take him down for tarnishing the Presidency, he is committed to doing it the r... moreight way. That's why he works so hard to race against time and try to foil a plot to assassinate the current President. The characterization is spot-on, the background is deep and lush, and the story had me in its grips even when I wasn't reading. I highly recommend this. I will definitely be seeking out more of Brad Meltzer's work!
review 2: 2nd in the Beecher White series. Beecher works in the National Archives and stumbles upon a plot where someone is killing off people in recreation of the four assassinations of the US President's. I still like Meltzer's research into history (assassination details, history of playing cards) but Beecher is still a bland hero. I liked trying to figure out who the killer and who could be trusted. But there is an overriding story that is going to carry the series and I am still not that interested in it at this point. less

If it wasn't for a cross-country flight, there is NO CHANCE I would have finished this.

Read it in two days. It was a really good put-my-brain-on-hold book.
