review 1: They say television/movie comic book science fiction tends to lag behind science fiction on the book stores shelves by 20 years or so. I think this applies to Prophet so far. This is a good, star spanning reboot of multiple Rob Liefield characters from the Extreme Comics days (Prophet, Diehard, Supreme and Troll as examples). This is not a fast paced tale, and I am thinking one might enjoy it more if they binge read all the volumes when the series is complete. The concepts of a degrading Empire and Earth, multiple incarnation of the same characters, and one of those incantations rebelling against the Empire's remnants are not new science fiction tropes, but they are relatively new to comics especially in the manner this story is being told. More Frank Herbert than Isaac... more Asimov.A fault is the lack of characterization.
review 2: I am absolutely loving this series.Brandon Graham's "barbarian space opera" is one of the best things going in comics today. I've yet to read his previous works (King City, Multiple Warheads, etc), but I've often heard how good of a "world builder" Graham is. While I can't confirm that regarding those others works (which I look forward to reading), it's quite evident in Prophet that he has as much fun making these strange worlds (and filling them with strange people, places and things) as I (and others, I'm sure) do reading about/looking at them. There are obvious influences from the great sci-fi comic art of Moebius (the alien desert lands) and the head-scratching weirdness of Jodorowsky's work in the medium...which I'm not going to complain about.I'm quite happy that, while I know a LITTLE about the original run of Rob Liefeld's Prophet back in the 90's (as well as his other Image titles...ugh), one doesn't have to have any sort of background knowledge of those awful comics. Brandon Graham, Image and, to his credit, Rob Liefeld have completely re-packaged the character and have spawned something new, fresh, weird and wonderful. Also, just wanted to say how much I love Hiyonhoiagn. Best new character in comics...period.Boux! less

The current "Prophet" is the new "Heavy Metal."
