review 1: Definitely for older readers 16 + as it is very explicit in places. There is not one false note in this novel. Every sentence is true and real. Here is a real antidote to the grotesque depiction of 'The Shire" on TV. As a theatre director Cowell skillfully weaves the time sequence of the narrative to explore every facet of the intoxicating love triangle between his alter-ego Neil Cronk (!), his best friend and his first love. A true insight into an extraordinarily creative man's mind, I will never look at Cronulla and Bathurst (where he spent his Uni years studying Drama) in the same way. Magical, incredible, intoxicating. He also wrote the script for 'Love my Way' one of my favourite TV series.
review 2: (I'd rather give this 3 1/2 than 3, but I can't, alas.) I
... more was engaged with the story and impressed by the writing, the style, the fluidity and the rug pulled from beneath your feet in (all the right) places. To the writer's credit, he creates a loathesome, frustrating protagonist and enables you to be *just* enough inside his addled, narcissistic head to identify with him in spite of yourself, not with any sense of pathetic sympathy, and not sufficient to diminish your dislike of him, but enough to sustain you in following the story to its conclusion. less

In the end I hated the main character, but I think that only made me like this book more
