review 1: Brennan Manning was a consistent voice looking at the spiritual journey through God's eyes. In this work there is a heart-warming representation of God's inexhaustible love for us. He speaks of specific areas in our lives where God desires to move beyond intellectual ascent to true intimacy. And, in a way particular to Manning, he exercises bold transparency from his own live as he seeks to demonstrate God's great love. There are moments when I am concerned with the lack of emphasis on the demands of the gospel, yet I sense that Manning is seeking a corrective to the "do-ism" in American spirituality by showing how God has already achieved the means to true love in Christ Jesus.I recommend this book to those who want more that external rituals. They want those symbols to co... moreme alive in their hearts because of the call to mystical union championed by this wonderful voice to the Church.
review 2: The premise of this book was interesting, and I think that its message (the importance of focusing on God's love for us, and how this is often under-appreciated in contemporary theology) is meaningful, but the way it actually presented that message didn't resonate with me very much. The writing is decent, and there are stretches where Manning (who, for some reason, all the reviewers quoted on the book jacket seem to refer to by first name. Does everyone who reviewed his book know this guy?) is very eloquent. He also shares many very instructive anecdotes and episodes from his own life. But mostly the book feels rushed, and like he is trying to say too many things at one time. In the context of a work about religion, specifically one meant to be more personally helpful than education (i.e., it's more about how to live your life than about theology), this impulse is understandable; it seems like Manning wants to make sure he says all the meaningful things he has thought of on this very important topic, because they would obviously be so helpful to people, and he doesn't want his readers to miss out on anything. I agree that the topic is very important and discussing it has the potential to help many people, but I think Manning's readers would be better served if he went through fewer points in more depth, or made the book longer to accommodate fully exploring each idea before jumping to the next one. Also, the book seems to build on ideas from Manning's other books (none of which I've read), so at times I felt a little lost.I will also admit that I may have read this book too quickly; it might be something that would be better to read over a few days and think over, rather than reading it in one day like I did (I had borrowed it from someone and needed to return it). So maybe I'd suggest to prospective readers that, even though the book looks like something you could easily blow through quickly, take a bit more time with it and you might appreicate it better. less
