review 1: Uh oh. It would seem now that the initial ideas have been introduced Vaughn has begun running out of steam. The saggy middle section of the story is not without its moments (for example it sports the delicious line "nothing warps time like childhood...") but it suffers structurally and lacks direction. It also does that tiresome thing where characters appear to die, then show up a few pages later, then appear to die again, (or did they?) The ideas contained in the first two volumes of the story are so good that I will excitedly complete the series, but I am raising my eyebrow for the first time.
review 2: My ONLY complaint about this series is that I can't read the whole thing RIGHT NOW. Gorgeous illustrations, interesting characters, and weird alien settings.
... more..what's not to love? Two races have been fighting a war for eons, but a guard & her charge have fallen in love, she's deserted her post, and two have had a child together. On the run from both sides, as well as his ex & a couple of for-hire assassins, the two are desperate to keep their mixed-race child safe.Loved all the tongue-in-cheek lines about writers & illustrators in this one. I love it when artists can make fun of themselves.I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy or graphic novels. If you're impatient, wait a bit longer, though. This is only vol 3 & you'll definitely be hungry to read the rest, like I am. less
