review 1: I'm not normally a fan of the horror genre but I'm kinda liking this "new horror" stuff. This book reminded me of The Ruins in its overall tone. I went in to the reading a bit cautious; wondering if the storyline was just going to be another hokey rip-off of books like Hunger Games or Battle Royale. It wasn't at all. Keene brought some unique elements to the plot line and I was very impressed with his caliber of storytelling. The book contains some of your usual "token" characters but also introduced some very unique creatures that got me thinking on several different levels. What I would love to see is a sequel to address what happened after this story left off. I don't think there are plans in the works for such a novel but there is a lot of potential for some fun to be ... morehad in such a sequel.
review 2: Right from the start this book was intended to be a homage to Mr. Keene's friend and mentor, the late Richard Laymon. If you are familiar with Laymon's work, you will catch the subtle jokes right away (such as a well placed "rump" or a very horny main character). This book, while it is certainly Mr. Keene's funner and quicker reads, does not (understandably) stand up to his other work. If you are looking for an amazing piece of literature by the same author, I would recommend Dark Hollow. This book shouldn't be looked at as part of the catalog that is Brian Keene's work. It should be taken more as a gift for the genre. It is a step away from his usual stuff, and for this one book he allowed himself to indulge on all of the stereotypes of the horror genre. The best part is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. That is, not to say, that this book is not intense. It is very intense. If you're a fan of Keene, Laymon, or 90's/00's horror, then you will absolutely love this book. If you're looking for a quick and fun read, you will love this book.If you just found out about some random author named Brian Keene, and have no clue about this guy's work or anything else he's contributed... I would say don't read this book......yet. less

I've never watched Survivor, but probably would if things turned out like they do in this book.
