review 1: After reading - and enjoying - this book, it was the Author's afterward that really got me thinking. He cited it as originally spawned as a short-story intended as a prequel of Richard Laymon's "Beast House" mythos. Interesting. Things were changed in the manuscript, but the work still stands solid as a description of where those Monsters in Laymon's House originally came from - even drawing off short, seemingly minor passages in Laymon's work. I'm glad it was an afterward. Because the book already kind of smelled like Laymon, though, in my opinion, the writing was better, and I never thought once about the connection except for obvious influences. A great afterward, one of the best ones ever - that was the real shocker of the book. Keene also mentioned his own mythos in t... morehe afterword. I'm very curious. There are some unanswered questions about the cave-paintings in particular. I'm trying to locate my copy of "The Conqueror Worms" but can't find it anywhere. This one - "Castaways" - is my first Keene book, and I'm ready to see what else he has.Definitely a talent. I'm here for more.
review 2: Castaways or as I like to think of it, "Survivor: Gore Island" is a superbly gruesome book by Brian Keene. The premise of the novel is modeled after the reality series Survivor, only on this island an unknown "beast' race is the indigenous species and they are none to pleased with the island newcomers. The thought of winning the million dollar prize on this show falls to the wayside as these contestants fight for their lives. This was the first book I have read by Brian Keene and I am looking forward to reading many more. less
